Can anyone reccomend a book or documentary that explains how companies like Google and Microsoft make money from surveillance of users? I understand some of the basics, but would really like a deep understanding. Preferably something aimed at laypeople, rather than people with a tech professional background. Thanks!

@hypostase @billbennett The fundamental idea of the Fedi is that *it can be whatever I want it to be*, for anyone who takes that attitude because it's #libre. That's entirely not the case for anything proprietary. Therein lies the fundamental difference. Even the BDFL can have their project forked - we've seen it many times. The people always have power in the Libre world. They *never* do in the proprietary world.

@billbennett @artnacrea How much do you know about F-Droid or Aurora, etc.? Here's a comprehensive list: github.com/offa/android-foss - not only are the instances of the stores curated, but the frameworks they're built on are #libre, too, allowing other people to leverage & improve them. It seems miraculous that the media doesn't get how huge that is. Growth via replication rather than inflation. In built diversity rather than a single point of failure (or corruption).

@billbennett sure. I get it. My main concern, as a #libre advocate, is that even though you wouldn't have intended it, I suspect many people will get the 'Google=good and Open source=dodgy' message, which isn't ideal from my perspective. It needed an explicit statement: there's nothing inherently wrong with open source - the problem is unscrupulous vendors.

Huh, imagine, gov't IT systems vastly over priced: rnz.co.nz/news/national/543767 and imagine - the soluion: "buy more off-the-shelf". 🤦 Why not pay local providers to build #libre / #FOSS solutions that can be used across gov'ts around the world?! We're not competing with other gov'ts! What if they did the same & most of our gov't IT systems came from other countries' libre efforts, supported by our *local* industry, not Trump's BigTech puppetmasters or minions, depending on your POV. Show leadership.
