I love surprises. This #plant was almost dead when I got it from the lady who gave me the 2 rectangular #planters last year and said she had problem keeping it alive.

I changed the pot, added some home made #compost to it last summer and now she is full of pretty #flowers.

Cleaning up the balcony and found a bunch of #strawberries.

Ate the 2 that were big and juicy and saving these until they are ready.

This is the beginnings of building a hűgel. A hűgel is a tall, self fertilised raised bed.

It’s a useful way of using the unwanted wood I’ve collected from both clearing the plot and hedge brushwood.

In time organic matter will be added into the pile of wood. A soil or compost outer layer will be added to plant directly into.

The inner wood and compostable material will break down to fertilise the bed and also provide wildlife habitat.

A pit dug out and filled with the various bits of old and rotting wood I have cleared from the plot. The soil from the pit is heaped to the side. Some pallets of a compost area are visible in the background.

A mound of hedge cleared wood of different sizes and thicknesses. This forms the basis of a hűgel which will have organic matter added to it bit by bit. Eventually it will become a self fertilised raised bed. In the meantime it will provide habitat for wildlife. A shed and two palleted compost bays are behind it. Bags of wood chip are piled up in front of the compost bays.

Another cutting from the street plants that is growing so well.

The roots inside the water reservoir of the 2L self watering unit are over 70cm long.

I'm thinking about keeping this one because I love the red color and it can get really big on the fence of our future house.

These now to then photos are about three months apart.

November to February in our temperate UK winter climate.

The overgrowth is now being turned into compost.

An allotment plot with a dried grass mulched raspberry bed in the front, leaf mould mulch behind. Soil excavated from under the central path is mulching the beds either side. The only bought compost is the darker stuff on the right. Every other mulch material has been found for free. A orangey yellow hawthorn wood chip pathway runs down the length of the plot. Most of the no dig beds have been started now. There is a pile of shrub wood on the right with some untamed brambles behind. A boundary hedge runs down the right hand side of the plot. An old wooden shed sits at the bottom of the plot.
