The 5 stages of govt response to inflation:
1. Denial. There is no inflation.
2. Anger. Inflation is caused by an uptick in greed.
3. Bargaining. Give the govt more power and it will stop inflation.
4. Depression. We are NOT in one!
5. Acceptance. Tough luck, sucker!

IMHO the Clinton machine was always a "tough luck, sucker little people" mentality.
